Denaakk’e Language Activity for Kids and Caregivers

This is a summer series of inter-generational Denaakk’e language learning activities for children accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Each activity will be led by Doyon Foundation Language Revitalization Program staff Jennifer Mayo-Shannon and Diloola Erickson, and each activity will have a theme as follows:
May 3 – Cooking, potlatch preparation, and traditional songs
June 21 – Giving and taking directions; Simon says and charades
July 12 – Household chores and counting games
August 16 – Colors and beading, with necklace making
The “Denaakk’e Dedeenee” series is part of a year-long program of Native language activities co-organized by the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center, Doyon Foundation, the Alaska Native Language Center at UAF, Denakkanaaga, and Tanana Chiefs Conference Cultural Programs. This programming is associated with UNESCO’s International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019, and contributes to the implementation of the broader goal of the International Year of promoting, revitalizing and preserving indigenous languages.
