Cultural Traditions Workshops are made possible by Tanana Chiefs Conference in partnership with the CIRI Foundation, ConocoPhillips Alaska, and Alyeska Pipeline Service Company.

Audrey Armstrong was born in Galena, Alaska, and grew up in Huslia and Nulato. When she started basketry, she didn’t have a teacher or a book, just stories from her auntie about how the village used fish skins centuries ago. But you are lucky. You’ll learn this skill under Audrey’s expert guidance in this four day workshop. We will supply all the materials necessary, including a whole salmon that you will cut, scrape, and clean, then sew together with sinew. Finally, you will embellish your basket with beads, shells and other small but precious items.
