Lena Tickett, an Inupiaq Eskimo, grew up in the village of Kobuk, Alaska. She learned to make birch bark baskets from her mother when she was 14-years-old. It’s not easy—Lena rarely has any fingerprints left after working with the tough bark and spruce roots. She and her cultural.programs@tananachiefs.org partner Al Capsul collect the birch bark and spruce roots in the summer, and make baskets and other birch bark items all year long. Emma Hildebrand was born in Northway and raised in a semi-subsistence lifestyle. Her Koyukon Athabascan mother taught her to bead and skin sew from the age of seven. She was selected Miss WEIO in 1981 in a moosehide parka with beadwork and beaver fur trim that was her first major project that took a full year to complete. She earned a Business Administration degree from UAF in 1986 and returned to Northway where she was CEO of Northway’s Native corporation…

The Tanana Yukon Historical Society invites you to celebrate the 2020 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race with a free showing of "Dawson City, Frozen Time."  This 2-hour documentary film by Bill Morrison revolves around the 1978 discovery of 533 reels of film frozen in Dawson's early swimming pool. The unearthed reels tell the Dawson City gold rush story, the dawn of 20th century America, and Hollywood in the silent era.  Attend so you can compare our respective early histories.…
