Gwich’in Athabascan Dixie Alexander was raised in a traditional Athabascan lifestyle in Fort Yukon, Alaska where her vitsuu (grandmother) Julia Peter mentored her in skin sewing, beading, and traditional knowledge. Emma Hildebrand was born in Northway and raised in a semi-subsistence lifestyle. Her Koyukon Athabascan mother taught her to bead and skin sew from the age of seven. She was selected Miss WEIO in 1981 in a moosehide parka with beadwork and beaver fur trim that was her first major project that took a full year to complete. She earned a Business Administration degree from UAF in 1986 and returned to Northway where she was CEO of Northway’s Native corporation…
